Community is an essential part of life as a Christian. Being surrounded by people that share the same love of God is important to growing in faith. If you have just moved away from home or haven’t had the opportunity yet to make other Christian friends, here are some ways you can build a faith-based community in college.
Stay After Sunday Church Services
Stick around after your church service ends. Approach different people and introduce yourself. This is a pretty simple way to meet people, and it also gives you the opportunity to ask about the church’s social events.
Join a Bible Study
I speak from experience when I say joining a Bible study is a great way to develop connections with people. When I joined my Bible study, it was a little awkward at first which made me hesitant. But as time went on, I grew closer with my group. It takes vulnerability to discuss the word of God with others. But, opening yourself up and bonding over scripture is a great way to build meaningful and godly friendships.
Explore other Churches
The goal is to make friends with people that share the same love of Christ as you. If you belong to a certain domination, don’t feel like you are limited to only making friends within that church. At my college, in the beginning of the school year, the different campus ministries will set up booths where you can find information about their services and events. If your college does not have something similar, try finding the different ministries’ social media or web pages. Also, it might be important to note that exploring other churches and their services/events just widens the range of potential Jesus lovin’ friends. It does not have to include committing to any other church besides your own.
Go to Ministry Social Events:
Going to social events can be intimidating, especially when you are new to a church. However, knowing that you and everyone else there shares the same love of God should bring you comfort. Personally, I have never met so many welcoming and inviting people until I started exploring the ministries on campus. People coming together with a common faith in Christ is a great experience that I think is important for any Christian to experience.
