Bible Verses For Homesickness

Despite the new adventures college can bring, leaving home for the first time can be terrifying. You are in a new and unfamiliar place without the comfort and security that you have been accustomed to. Although this time can be difficult, comfort and security can always be found in the word of God no matter where you go.

2 Corinthians 5:9

"So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him."

When I left home for the first time, it was a tough transition. I had left a place of comfort and security for a place that was unknown. A big change, like leaving moving away, is going to cause anxiety; however, as Christians our purpose remains the same no matter where we are. This is something to take comfort in. So next time you are feeling overwhelmed with the uncertainty of being away from home, submerge yourself in your purpose of pleasing God.

Colossians 3:2

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.”

It is easy to become so caught up in own worldly sadness that your Heavenly Father gets less prioritized. Focus your energy and time into practicing reliance on God. If you allow it, suffering can be a blessing. It gives you the opportunity to grow your relationship with Christ. The first step is to simply keep your mind focused on God.

Psalm 30:5

“For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”

Homesickness doesn’t just go away overnight – it takes time. Although it is difficult now, the pain of leaving home will eventually fade. In the meantime, find happiness in Christ. It is okay to want to process sadness, but you should also find comfort in God because He will bring you joy.

Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

If you have left home for the first time, it may be hard to find sources of joy. It’s possible that the people and things you used to seek comfort in are far away now. But do not be consumed in mourning over what is gone, instead, listen to this verse. 1. Rejoice. There are countless reasons to rejoice. Just for starters: you have a home that is worth missing. See homesickness as an indication of a blessing and rejoice in it. 2. Pray. Pray for comfort as well as for new sources of comfort. 2. Give thanks. No matter how difficult it gets, there is always something is be thankful for. I have found it helpful, before I get into bed, to write down all the blessings I experienced throughout the day and thank God for every one of them.
