Bible Verses That Support Women Empowerment

In college, people are especially encouraged to express ideas and explore social issues. If you come from a small conservative town like me, this concept can take some getting used to. One topic of discussion, I’ve noticed that gets brought up often in a college setting is feminism. Women, for the most part, are not expected to be submissive anymore. We have more freedom and self-expression than ever before, which is great! But I think once Christians start to get exposed to more ideas about women empowerment, we can start to question if this ideology lines up with the faith. I argue that women empowerment and Christianity can live in harmony, and the Bible can back me up.

Corinthians 1 11:11-12

“However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.”

It seems like a lot of people think the creation story supports misogyny since women were created from men. But I think the fact that God created women to be the source of life for all humans (including men) is overlooked. Honestly, before reading this verse, I never really thought about it. But now I see how the value of men and women are equal in God’s eyes. Because like the verse says you can’t have women without men, but you also can’t have men without men – the two are independent of each other.

Proverbs 31:30

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

Women are praised in the Bible a lot, especially considering its setting. There are so many strong females that are acknowledged and recognized in scripture. For instance, Mary Magdalene, the woman at the well who had multiple husbands, was saved by Jesus in the New Testament. Later on, she ends up being the first person to see that Jesus has risen from his tomb after the crucifixion. I think that the fact that a woman was the first witness of this miracle speaks volumes.

Luke 30-31

“But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.’”

Speaking of strong females represented in the Bible…

Mary is one of the most recognized biblical figures of both men and women. The story of Mary shows that strength and bravery are not exclusive to men. Out of trust in God, Mary risked her reputation by agreeing to carry a child before she was married. She also shows an insane about of emotional strength at the time of Jesus’s crucifixion. With such a strong representation of a positive female figure, it’s clear that God doesn’t undervalue women but rather recognizes our worth.
