Bible Verses For Breakups

Breakups suck. They really do. Whether or not you’re the one being broken up with, it was still probably unexpected in a way. You typically don’t go into a relationship intending to break up. And its always disappointing when expectations get let down. Personally, for me, the hardest parts of a breakup are dealing with the uncertainty of starting over and trusting that this is the right thing. These Bible verses stick out to me because they remind me of the comfort that God offers us in times of hurt:

Psalm 33:11

“The plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”

I know it sounds cliché to say but God does have a plan for you. That being said, it doesn’t make breakups any easier. Even though the relationship was not meant to be, it’s okay to be disappointed in God’s plan. Allow yourself to feel that disappointment while acknowledging that God’s plan for your future is better than any expectation you may have had.

Matthew 6:34

"So do not be anxious about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

I know firsthand the effect of the uncertainty that comes with breakups. Sometimes breakups can cause a lot of change, and with change comes anxiety. If you were with your boyfriend for a long period of time, your future plans may have even been altered. However, this verse instructs us to get rid of anxiety while also acknowledging the hardships that got us there in the first place. In a way, this verse is simply telling us to take it one day at a time. And be kind to yourself. You’ve probably already suffered enough today, why worry about tomorrow?

1 Corinthians 10:13

“No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your own strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.”

This verse leads us back to the idea of hope and trust in God. Here, we are reassured that we’re capable of overcoming any hardship in our lives. Although suffering is full of pain, sadness, and heartache, it is not necessary to become consumed in its affliction. God always provides a way out; so, in the meantime, rejoice in your suffering and have trust because it will never fail when it comes to love of God.
