5 Helpful Tips if You are Unsure About Your Major

For obvious reasons, it is stressful to decide what you will do for the rest of your life straight out of high school. Understandably, a lot of people may find it difficult to choose a major based off of limited life experience. However, don't panic if that is you. Through my own

journey, I have recognized ways to cope with not having a solid plan - the key being faith (as it so often is).

1. Let yourself know it’s okay to be unsure

It’s easy to be disappointed in yourself for not having all the answers. I’ve been there before, so I know first-hand how important it is to give yourself a break. It might seem like everyone around you is secure in their plans for life, but the truth is no one has all the answers. In fact, the U.S Department of Education says about 30% of undergraduates end up changing their major within the first three years of college. So, just remember that there are many people in the exact same boat as you.

2. Give up control

Giving up control doesn’t mean to put in 0 effort. You can still work towards deciding your major while also trusting in God to lead you where you were ultimately meant to be. Just like Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

3. Pray

As simple, and maybe even as obvious, as it sounds praying can be super helpful when making a big decision like changing/deciding your major. In Proverbs 3:6, it doesn’t say that your path will inevitably straighten out on its own. It says, first, you must acknowledge the Lord. Accepting God into your plans and asking for His guidance, allows you to be confident in whatever decision you make.

4. Don’t get discouraged

If you feel like you are doing everything right but still don’t feel like God has led you any closer to a making an absolute decision, do not be discouraged. John 5:14 says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us." Just because it seems like your prayers aren’t being answered doesn't mean that they have been lost to oblivion. Take comfort in knowing God has heard your prayers. Have hope because the one being that knows your heart better than anyone else, including yourself, is in control.
